John Gilmore watches as his men pull seventeen-year-old Euwenn Gilmore’s body from the river one cold April day. His son, drowned along the gentle Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. John, his wife, and Euwenn's siblings grieve the bright young man -- his future, his past, his buoyant personality. 

Standing just outside the light of their familial love, Euwenn himself grieves the only life he's ever known. He wants to shout at them that he is not dead, that is not him. But he cannot. For if he does, they die. He is alone now, cursed to wander the streets unloved and unknown. That cold, rainy night, Euwenn turns away from love, from life, from happiness and wanders into the streets of Pittsburgh, barely wondering what this new, cursed life will look like.
